Christian Dior: Designer Wanted, Apply Within

No matter how glamorous and magical the life of a famous fashion designer appears to be, we all must remember; you can’t judge a book by its cover. For fashion designers are no more perfect than you and I. In fact, they fuck things up just as much as we do but there is a difference: the repercussion factor is a lot higher for them.

John Galliano knows this first-hand.

For me, his departure is bitter-sweet. He’s disgustingly racist but could design the shit out of a piece of fabric. Sigh.

After looking at the runway images of what will be his last collection for Dior, I’m left with the overwhelming need to purchase a pair of knickerbockers.

How cute are these bloody pants?

Still, this lovely collection doesn’t make up for his behavior. Let’s face it; he’s over. And rightly so.

But I’m still kind of annoyed at something. Why did it take this long to ‘out’ him for his disgusting, racist remarks? You’re telling me that these women who filmed him back in October 2010 and the couple who accused him last month were the ONLY witnesses--ever?
Sorry but talk like that doesn't happen overnight.

IT'S ONLY A GAME

That was the name of the Alexander McQueen Spring/Summer 2005 RTW show that will forever be one of the best displays of fashion and art, in history. In my opinion, of course.

It's one year ago today that we lost him so instead of thinking about that terrible day, let's celebrate and enjoy all the marvelous contributions he made to fashion over his (short) lifetime.

It's Only a Game

I guess you could say, this collection was kind of like his 'best of' or 'greatest hits' as he had a little bit of everything he was known for (up until that time) displayed on models atop a giant chessboard.

Of course, beneath the frills and playfulness of the clothing, some darknesss...as there usually was with McQueen collections.

This particular show was based on some dark movie (which I have yet to see) called Picnic at Hanging Rock. Basically, it's about some schoolgirls who go missing after an outing with one of their teachers.

Jason Stackhouse Does LAX

If you don't know who this is, you're not watching enough television. Or sadly, you're not watching True Blood.

Looking quite monochromatic, Ryan Kwanten who plays the delicious Jason Stackhouse on True Blood, arrives at LAX yesterday.

The thing about mens style is; it's difficult to detect if he's really thought about his outfit or just threw something on for a flight. And which of the two is sexier?

In this case, when you look this good, does it really matter?

The answer is: yes!

Imagine for a moment he showed up to LAX in a Christian Audigier hoody, baseball cap and Dockers.

If this were the case, he certainly wouldn't be featured on this blog unless he was chosen for the 'DOA'.

ALEXANDER McQUEEN, the enfant terrible of British fashion, was appointed chief designer at Givenchy yesterday.
The 27-year-old east Londoner, who showed his most recent collection in a swimming pool and is best known for creating "bumster" trousers - cut alarmingly low at the back - will design haute couture and ready-to-wear as well as his own label.
He follows John Galliano, 36, the son of a south London plumber, who took over at Givenchy in 1995 and moves on to head the larger house of Christian Dior.
Although Galliano had long been tipped for the Dior job, McQueen's appointment was less certain. Everyone from Vivienne Westwood to Jean-Paul Gaultier was rumoured to have been considered. McQueen was reported to have turned down the job, but he had a change of heart last week and travelled to Paris to sign the contract.
Givenchy's brief statement spoke of McQueen's "brilliant creativity, combined with his technical mastery", which would "ensure the ongoing evolution of Givenchy's tradition of elegance".

THE first haute couture show by Alexander McQueen for the established house of Givenchy proved beyond doubt last night that British fashion designers are now leading the world. The "East End lad" was always an unlikely choice for such a prestigious house but the gamble has paid off. Taking over from fellow British designer John Galliano, who has moved to Dior, McQueen pushed the boundaries of fashion to its limits with a collection based on Greek mythology.

We may be grasping at straws here but there are some similarities between this collection and his last two Womenswear collections.....

Wondering, if interviewed now, would he still call this first collection for Givenchy, 'crap' or just the beginnings of runway awesomeness.

Can I just start with Ricky Gervais before I get into the red carpet results?

Not really sure what all the fuss is about as he was doing his job. That’s what comedians are supposed to do; make fun of everyone in the room so their comfort levels are thrown out the window.

Hollywood needs to get over itself.

With the help of Twitter, let’s recap last night’s red carpet.

Best

Claire Danes in pink Calvin Klein absolutely glowed last night. However, most Tweeters wanted to know who that strange woman in the cowgirl outfit was, mauling poor Claire as she got out of her seat.

Um, it’s the real Temple Grandin. Let’s just say that Twitter can sometimes be pop-culture-challenged.

Speaking of being pop-culture-challenged, I didn’t know who this person was but admired her dress. As it turns out, she was a nominee!

Ouch. I’ll get it right next year, promise.

A simple black dress, a chic chignon and a red lip: always a winning formula.

Kyra Sedgewick in Emilio Pucci looked stunning last night. Her dress flowed beautifully and gave her look a relaxed, fresh feeling. She was also one of the best accessorized women on the red carpet---check out her jewelry.
Love it all. Also, when will Hollywood starlets figure out that a simple chignon never, ever goes out of style? A+

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive brought sexy back last night. HOT, HOT, HOT. However, she could have done something different with her hair---was a tad boring.

Maybe deep down I’m just a slut but I loved this dress on January Jones.
Hey, you’re only young and gorgeous once so flaunt it before gravity takes over.

The Best Green: And then there was Brangelina. They must loving showing up to red carpets, stealing everyone’s thunder. Angie wore the most beautiful green Versace dress, accented with sequins and a bold shoulder. Perfection. Has a late 70’s Halston feel to it....

Worst

And then there was the Worst green: Catherine Zeta Jones in Monique l'Huillier

This one was easy: Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf

Tilda Swinton in Jil Sander. This so-called fashion icon failed last night. Don’t care that it’s Jil Sander, it’s not flattering at all. However, looks like many people liked this ‘look’.

Leighton Meester in Burberry was elegant but just a little bit of a snooze fest. If you’re young, hot and gorgeous, you should dress like it.

Elizabeth Moss in Donna Karan: loving the colour, loving the hair but the bodice isn’t 100%. Looks a bit strange at the boobs. However, overall, she was ravishing last night.
Wonder what she uses on her skin…hmmm.

Another Marchesa disaster.
I’m sure this designer makes gorgeous dresses because I’ve seen them. Why are the celebs picking these monstrosities?

Honorable mention

Hideousness that somehow works a la Helena Bonham Carter. She’s nuts and gives me the impression that she really doesn’t give a shit.

The high-waist thing typically looks fun and rather cute from the front, especially if you opt for a sailor-type pant or short.

Now, we looked all over the web to find out who designed this thing and all we could come up with was a shout-out to poor old Jimmy Choo. Those lace-up, pole-dancing things she's wearing on her feet are the work of Choo. Ouch, Tamara Mellon, ouch.
So, we're thinking whoever or whatever it was that made this frock, is hiding deep underground somewhere, wildly sewing its next monstrosity for New Hollywood.
Wake us when it's over!!!

However, as bad as this dress is, there are worse things out there like bloggers who think she looks 'appropriate' but also 'classy and trashy', wtf?

It happens quite often in luxury retail; the gorgeous but 'out-of-reach for many' handbag quickly becomes a tacky piece of crapola that store's like Neiman Marcus can't even give away.

However, in this case, 'giving away' is not a term Neiman's is familiar with.
Even though it's now 33% off the retail price (seriously? this bag should be at least 50% off at this point), it's still $1,507.00
Not only that, this Valentino rose thing has been copied and re-copied for the last two years now. It's just very tired.

And here's how this bag is described:
Radiant sequins amplify the signature Petale tote—now in a smaller, go-anywhere size.

So, this is the 'smaller, go-anywhere size'? Holy shit! Makes you wonder what the price of the 'larger, go some places size' is.

Sending Chritmas Cards: Victorian's Do It Better

A few days ago, we tweeted just how much we love sending out Christmas cards and hoped that it was a 'trend' that would never die.
More than a few people retweeted and responded in agreement; they, too loved the Christmas Card via Snail Mail thing. This got us all warm & fuzzy inside!

Did you know that the Victorian's were responsible for creating the world's very first, commercial Christmas card?

The New Darling of French Design

If you haven’t heard of Maxime Simoens, chances are, you will.

At 26 years old, this young designer is making quite a name for himself amongst savvy fashion insiders. Working for the likes of Balenciaga, Christian Dior and Elis Saab, his greatness is hardly a surprise.

When we were in Europe last month, we were delighted to see some of his Fall/Winter 2010 fabulousness at Le Printemps in Paris.

Now, we hate comparing designers but we have to say; his style reminds us of Alexander McQueen with those correctly placed embellishments and architectural shapes.......

And we couldn't help but notice all the love Melanie Laurent is showing this young talent.

A perfect example of how a well-made, neutral blazer can go from dressy to casual in an instant. The structured blazer is the MUST HAVE item, any season. It's classic.

He made this dress in full length as well but it was a bit much. It's younger and fresher in the short version.

While he's getting press everywhere, we really enjoyed this piece from one of our favorite bloggers, Susan Tabak because in true 'Susan Style', she points out what it is exactly that she likes about his designs. She always writes honest pieces, spoken from the point of the luxury consumer.

Artist Spotlight: Helmut Newton

I fell in love with Helmut Newton in the early 90's, after stealing a PHOTO magazine (France) from my dentist's office.

On the cover that month: Nadja Auermann, photographed by none other than Helmut Newton.

Since that serendipitous day, I've collected ALL of his wonderful books and any biography I could get my hands on.

To this day, no other photographer has come close to making me feel the way I do when I see a Newton B&W photo.

He was a master who, to this day, is constantly being copied.

He had a 'thing' for strong women

Here she is, making an appearance at BBC radio, Friday, July 30th...wearing a Hershey's Kiss on her head!

Why does this work on her? We don't know....this is just one of the many mysteries of Style.

When you go it, you got it.

Trying to dissect her style would be almost as difficult as trying to dissect Lady Gaga's fondness for defacing Hermes Birken bags.

O.M.G are the only words that come to mind after viewing the gorgeousness of the Bottega Veneta Spring 2011 show, Milan Fashion Week.

You boys are lucky! In fact, if I were a boy, I would be coveting EVERYTHING in this line because it's simple, modern and totally utilitarian.

Some highlights:

Every man needs a great suit, or two but what most men don't understand is, a suit isn't only for weddings and funerals.

There is nothing like a casual, summer suit--it can be dressed up or down.

If you buy the right color, fabric and style, you'll have it forever.

Monochromatic dressing is safe, idiot-proof and will always look chic. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the pants.

There's just something about Khaki that screams Spring. It's such a great color because it can be worn with just about everything, much like black.

The cargo short is a must-have for every man--they rarely go out of style.

In the 80's, no other television show had the glitz and glamour (and catfights) that Dynasty had.

Each week, without fail, my Mom and I would sit down to an hour's worth of couture, sex and outrageous behaviour--it was a dream.

Joan Collins played Alexis Carrington; a rich bitch with a platinum card, an endless supply of hot men and a soft-spot for her ex-husband, Blake.

Blake was happily married to Krystle Carringtion (played by Linda Evans) who I think was his tenth wife, or something like that.
Anyway, those catfights I mentioned? There were lot's but the best ones were between Alexis & Krystle--these bitches knew how to throw a punch or two.

It was magical.

Joan Collins, now 77, comes back into the spotlight here and there but not nearly enough. I wish someone would give her a decent show--she plays the Evil Bitch role better than anyone.
Sigh.

There was no shortage of fashion tragedies at the Patricia Field's 'Swimsational Soiree' for Sex & The City 2 on May 25, 2010.

However, Designer Stella Zotis (a former Project Runway contestant), takes the cake.
She showed up to the event in what looks to be a couple of pieces of outdoor living fabric, held together with everything but good taste.

Well, it's finally here: SATC 2 will be released this Friday.

Tonight, in NYC, the world premiere of the film is kicking off with a Red Carpet event at Radio City Music Hall.

The Met Costume Institute Gala 2010 ~ Red Carpet

Last night, the fashion elite (and some unworthy celebrities) descended upon the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC for the Annual Costume Institute Gala.

The good news is, most of the models and fashion designers looked amazing. The other good news is, most of the other attendees looked like they were trying too hard.
This basically means I have something to blog about today.

I saw a lot of white/off-white dresses on the Red Carpet last night but only a chosen few got it right.

Best Whites

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to know Vera Wang could work it in white.

It hurts me to put Taylor Swift on my blog at all, let alone a best dressed list but her dress last night was gorgeous. Also, her hair & makeup were spot on.

Donna Karan. Perfection. Can't say much more about her.

Tommy Hilifiger's wife, Dee Ocleppo looked marvelous in her white gown. Simple and elegant.

Best Colour

Ok, so it's more like best pink tones but here they are anyway.

Naomi Watts suits this fuschia colour, pefectly. Also, I don't mind that big puffy thing on her shoulder--it works.

Thandie Newton in Vivienne Westwood = British Gorgeousness. Thandie can do no wrong.

Rachel Weisz in a hot pink Oscar de la Renta gown added some freshness to the sea of blacks, dark blues and fashion tragedies. When will celebs figure out that 'When worse comes to worse, go with Oscar". It's a no-brainer.

Carolina Herrera looked like royalty last night.

Best--period:

Anna Wintour in Chanel basically means all is well with the fashion world. She looked marvelous.
Camilla Belle was the best in Red last night. There wasn't much red but her and this Jason Wu dress was gorgeousness.
Kate Bosworth in this glorious Valentino dress looked beautiful last night. From head-to-toe. Her stylist shoud take a bow.
I loved that Alexa Chung wore this Phillip Lim suit. It's her and she knows how to pull it off.

Diane Kruger has had an amazing fashion year but hit an all-time low last night in this boring Calvin Klein dress. It needed a plunging something or other.

As for January Jones, the dress (YSL) wouldn't be as bad if she lost the gloves and wore normal makeup. WTF?

Amanda Seyfried showed up to the Mother and Child premiere on April 20th in a lovely Bodyamr dress.
Only problem is, her 'fashion-desperation-to-be-avant-garde' overcame her and she just looked like a girl who put her dress on backwards.

Taking The High Road Can Hurt

When it comes to heels, do you know how high you should go without causing permanent damage to your feet? And your ego, if you can't walk in the bloody things.

(unfortunately for supermodels, they test the boundaries each time they walk down the runway)

According to podiatrists, the height that you can comfortably (and safely) wear is based on your subtalar joint, found in the middle of your foot.
The optimal position varies from person to person….so, do you want to find yours?

What you'll need:

A friend
Two rulers

Sit down, then raise and extend your foot while relaxing your ankle.
Have your friend place one ruler downward from your big toe, then have her use the second ruler to measure the distance between your heel and the first ruler.
This number equals the absolute maximum heel height you should be wearing. (again, that's should, not could)

According to my results, my 3-inch heels are bad for me.
My 4-inch heels? Well, they're killing me.
If you're brave enough to wear 5+ inch heel, your foot is currently begging you for mercy.

But we knew this already, right?

While doing some shopping both online and in store, I've noticed that most of the skirts I'm seeing are either short & printed or short & lace/chiffon in soft nudes.

But there's one thing that most of these cute skirts have in common this season: a big flouncy factor!

The Erdem Spring 2010 went floral-frill-crazy!

I'm really loving that Top Shop eyelet skirt.....

How adorable were the models at the D&G show? Love all the frills and denim together-a great fashion contradiction: hard meets soft in one outfit.

Pair your frilly skirt with a simple tee & cowboy boots a la D&G or dress it up with a tailored jacket for an evening out.

When it comes to nails, I don’t take many risks-I like a classic look.
It’s either a dark red, a French pink or Lincoln Park After Dark for me so when I see blue polish popping up all over the place, I cringe.

I’ll never try an electric blue (unless my manicurist gets me drunk) but a navy blue can certainly work for someone like me; a nail polish Prudence McPrude.

I'm going to try that Butter London shade of navy. That's as far as I'll go.
